Elga Cromarod 309L Electrode – A Stainless and Dissimilar Welding Rod
Elga Cromarod 309L Electrode is a rutile flux coated electrode which deposits a 23%Cr / 13%Ni austenitic stainless-steel weld metal.
The high alloy content and ferrite level enable the weld metal to tolerate dilution from mild and low alloy steels without hot cracking or brittle structures.
309L Electrode is suitable for welding stainless steel and welding stainless steel to mild steel.
Available in sizes 2.5mm x 2.5kg, 3.2mm x 3kg & 4.0mm x 3kg tins
Trying do decide which stainless electrode to use, here’s a short guide that might help.
When to use 309L, 308L or 316L electrode when welding?
- Â 309L and 309Lsi is used when joining mild steel or low alloy steel to stainless steels. Great for joining dissimilar stainless steels such as 409 to itself or to 304L stainless, as well as for joining 309 base metal.
- 308L and 308LSi is mostly used on austenitic stainless steels, these include types 301, 302, 304, 305 and cast alloys CF-8 and CF-3. For high temperature applications such as in the electrical power industry, the high carbon 308H electrode provides better creep resistance than does 308L.
- 316LÂ and 316LSi filler metal should be used with 316L and 316 base metals.
- Use 347 stainless electrode for 347 and 321 base materials because it matches these stabilized grades. CF-8C is the cast equivalent of 347. Type 347 filler metal is also suitable most 308L filler metal applications.
309L Stainless Steel Electrode Applications-309L stainless steel MMA – Welding rod for stainless

— Buffer layers on mild and low alloy steels prior to overlaying with Cromarod 308L or Cromarod 347.
— Interface runs in clad steel joints.
— Joining of clad steels and dissimilar joints between stainless and mild or low alloy steels.
— Welding of similar composition 309 type austenitic stainless steels.
— Joining ferritic-martensitic 410 and 430 type stainless steels.
What is a Dissimilar Welding Rod?
A dissimilar welding rod is used in welding processes to join two metals of different compositions or properties. These types of welding rods are specially formulated to ensure compatibility and strength in the weld when connecting dissimilar materials. They are essential in applications where different metals need to be welded together, which can include combinations of stainless steel, carbon steel, alloy steels, nickel alloys, and more.
309L Welding Rods and 312 Welding electrodes can both be used as dissimilar welding rods.
The composition of a dissimilar welding rod is designed to manage the differences in thermal expansion, corrosion resistance, and mechanical properties between the two metals being joined. This ensures that the weld area has adequate strength and integrity, and can handle the stresses and environmental conditions to which it will be exposed. Dissimilar welding rods often contain elements that help stabilize the arc and facilitate the formation of a sound weld pool, accommodating the melting points and chemical compatibilities of the different base metals.
Selecting the right dissimilar welding rod depends on several factors, including the specific metals being joined, the intended application of the welded joint, the welding process being used (e.g., TIG, MIG, or stick welding), and the performance requirements of the weld (such as strength, corrosion resistance, and temperature tolerance). Proper selection and use of dissimilar welding rods are crucial for achieving a successful and durable weld in complex metalworking tasks.
