MSA Calibration Gas – Testing Gas [58L], 1.45% CH4, CO-60ppm, H2S 20ppm, O2 15%
MSA calibration gas is part if the complete line of MSA Safety gas detection products. MSA offers a complete line of calibration gas cylinders to calibrate all instruments. The gas mixture in calibration gas cylinders is certified to be prepared gravimetrically, using NIST traceable weights. The lot number and nominal value of the gas constituents in volume, percent by mass, PPM, or volume is specified on the cylinder.

What is MSA Calibration Gas?
MSA calibration gas is used in the calibration of gas detection equipment, specifically for devices manufactured by MSA, which stands for Mine Safety Appliances. This type of gas is a precisely mixed combination of gases that mimic the environment in which the detector will operate, but with known gas concentrations that are used to set and test the accuracy of the device.
The process of using calibration gas ensures that the gas detectors accurately measure the concentrations of specific hazardous gases in the air, such as carbon monoxide, hydrogen sulfide, methane, and oxygen, among others. Calibration is crucial because it confirms that the sensors in the detectors provide accurate readings, which is essential for safety in environments where gas leaks or accumulation might occur.
The calibration gas typically comes in small, portable cylinders and is connected to the gas detector during calibration. The specific composition of the calibration gas mixture will depend on the types of gases the detector is designed to monitor and the specific requirements for sensitivity and accuracy of the device. Proper calibration using the right type of MSA calibration gas ensures the device’s functionality in critical safety applications, such as in mining, industrial settings, and emergency response scenarios.
Regular calibration is recommended because the sensors in gas detectors can drift over time due to environmental factors or sensor aging, potentially leading to incorrect readings. This routine check helps maintain the reliability of the gas detection system, safeguarding against the risks associated with exposure to toxic or explosive gases.
