FAQ about the Crosarc MMA 161D Stick Welder

Do I need a 200A welder, or is 160A enough?

It’s down to what you plan on welding.  If you’re welding mild steel and planning to use a 6013 Electrode you’ll need the following amperages to run the size of electrode you want to use.

1.6mm   20-45 amps

2.0mm  35-60 amps

2.4mm  40-90 amps

3.2mm  80-130 amps

4.0mm 105-180 amps

5.0mm 150-230 amps

As you can see, the CrosArc 161D will run up to a 3.2mm electrode on 230 Volt. If you plan to run of 110V your maximum amperage with be 120 amps.  For 4.0mm + you will need a minimum of 200 amps.

The CrosArc 161D will also be suitable if you are welding stainless steel with up to a 3.2mm Stainless Electrode.

Can I use this welder away from the workshop?

Yes the CrosArc 161D stick welder is a dual voltage machine so you can take on site and use 110Volt.  If you plan to use on a generator, make sure your generator is a minimum of 8kVA – This is an inverter welder and very sensitive to power spikes.  If you use too small a generator, you will damage the circuit boards in the machine.
