Safety First: Protecting Yourself When Using Handheld Grinders

Handheld grinders are common and useful tools in welding and metal fabrication. However, they also pose risks of serious injury if not used correctly. Knowing the hazards of grinders and taking proper precautions can help prevent accidents and injuries when working with these powerful tools.

The discs can also shatter or explode if used incorrectly, sending fragments flying at high velocity. To mitigate these risks, there are several key safety measures to take:

Personal Protective Equipment

Always wear proper PPE when using a handheld grinder. At minimum, you need eye and face protection such as safety glasses and a face shield, thick work gloves, long sleeves and safety shoes or safety boots.

A respirator may also be needed to avoid inhaling any dust or particles generated during grinding. Wearing the right PPE can prevent injuries from flying debris and skin contact with the grinding disc.

Inspecting the Grinder

Grinding requires your full attention at all times. Concentrate on the task and be aware of the spinning disc. Never rush when using a grinder. Turn it off completely when not grinding to prevent accidental startup.
